* The Iditarod started when a terrible sickness was going around it was called diphtheria. They had to send dogs to give the people medicine. They had to send dogs because the planes were canceled due to the weather. That is how the Iditarod started.

* They start at Anchorage and end at Nome. There are 17 checkpoints this year they started at Fairbanks because there wasn't enough snow to start at Anchorage the race is 1049 miles. The race takes about 7 to10 days to finish.

* My musher’s name is Alan Eischens * He is 55 years old * He was born in Minnesota * His hometown is Adak, Alaska * His bib number is 7.

* The dogs wore harnesses * The types of dogs they were are Alaskan huskies * They also wore booties. * There were a total of 16 dogs.

The fist place winner gets 50,000 dollars. The last place musher gets a red lantern. The first musher to get to the checkpoint called Unalakleet gets the Wells Fargo Bank Alaska Gold Coast Award.
