Large numbers of students are being offered summer services. Some parents are not accepting services. Some students are feeling punished. Some students are not attending summer programs. Extended Year Services offered to Students disproportionate to need
3
Problem Summary Students should be given needed services (neither too little nor too much). Students, staff, administration, taxpayers. Proper identification of Extended Year Services is needed to insure students are neither under or over served. Baseline data indicated that nearly 50% of incoming 7 th grade students were identified as needing EYS. Time. Department meeting times were devoted to this issue.
4
Intervention strategies 1st – staff survey. 2nd – staff discussion. 3rd – staff review of IEPs. 4th – staff discussion. 5th – staff training. 6th – staff survey.
5
Evaluation/Results Second survey revealed better understanding of EYS. At the end on the year, an analysis of IEPs will reveal if the number of students identified for EYS changed.
6
Extend and Renew Continue to examine what is believed versus known. Continue to use the data to look at actual practices. Continue to provide professional development to staff in areas where it is clear that over-identification is contributing to over servicing.
7
Lessons Learned Some staff held on to beliefs even in the face of facts. Providing staff with information (data based) does not guarantee that they will abandon beliefs or change their practices but it may help some to look at and change their practice.
