Reducing Crime in the Retail Sector issues to consider… There are five town centres consisting mainly of small businesses and generally low levels of reported crime. Does this indicate a lack of business confidence to report crime? Are opportunities being maximised for collaboration between police and businesses? What action will follow from the publication of the recent Mayor of London Business Crime Strategy 2014-16?

The busiest town centre in Wandsworth; Covers parts of Northcote and Shaftesbury wards in the north east of the borough; Large transport hub generates high levels of pedestrian activity; Thriving late night economy; 1269 crimes during FY 2013/14, 16% (-241) fewer than the previous year. 70% of offences are theft. Shoplifting, theft from person and other (unattended) theft feature prominently. 14% reduction in offending thus far this financial year (to August), with 72 fewer offences. Central to a predominantly affluent, well- educated and young, professional population; Located to the north west of the borough, primarily within Thamesfield ward but also partially spilling over into East Putney ward Busy late night economy; 744 crimes during FY 2013/14, 20% (-166) fewer than the previous year. 70% of offences are theft, with other (unattended) theft, shoplifting and theft from the person featuring prominently. 18% reduction in offending thus far this financial year (to August), with 67 fewer offences. Has the most ethnically diverse catchment population of any of the town centres in Wandsworth. Located towards the south east of the borough, shared between sections of Tooting and Graveney wards. 858 crimes during FY 2013/14, 12% fewer (-112) than the previous year and the second consecutive yearly reduction. Majority of offences are theft, but proportionally has a higher level of violence than the town centre average. 0.5% increase in offending thus far this financial year (to August), with 2 additional offences. Located towards the centre of the borough, within the wards of Fairfield and Southfields. Subject to significant, ongoing residential and commercial development. 650 crimes during FY 2013/14, 6% fewer (-39) than the previous year and the second consecutive yearly reduction. 22% of offending in the town centre was violent in nature, the highest proportion of the five town centres. 12% reduction in offending thus far this financial year (to August), with 38 fewer offences. The smallest town centre in Wandsworth, with an increasingly young and affluent residential population. Located towards the east of the borough, in Balham ward and a small area of Nightingale ward. 492 crimes during FY 2013/14, 19% fewer (-114) than the previous year with a large reduction in theft, particularly unattended theft. There was a 35% increase in violence during 2013/14, though mostly low level and in small numbers (as Balham has a low level of violence overall, 70 across the year, mostly ‘low level’). 20% reduction in offending thus far this financial year (to August), with 42 fewer offences.
