Naming Groups in the Table And a Few Vocabulary Terms

Vocabulary Terms Malleable- Metals are malleable, which means they can be hammered or rolled into sheets like aluminum Ductile- Metal that can be drawn into wire like copper

Terms cont. Metallic Bond- When metals bond with themselves or with other metals they do so with metallic bonds These electrons in metallic bonds move freely. Movement of electrons gives us ____________?

Terms cont. Radioactive- Elements that breakdown easily. Most of the lower elements in a group are radioactive. (Francium and Radon) Transuranium Element- All elements after uranium (Atomic # 92) Can you name 5 of them?

Terms cont. Diatomic molecule- O 2, H 2, N 2 are examples. Two atoms of the same element together

The Groups Alkali Metals 1. Group 1 2. The most reactive 3. 1 electron in it’s outer shell (+1) 4. Most are shiny and good conductors Alkali Earth Metals 1. Group 2 2. Shiny, malleable, reactive 3. +2 4. Used in baseball bats, fireworks, camera flashes

More Groups Transition Elements 1. Groups 3-12 2. Most are metals 3. Most are a +1 or +2 4. Less active 5. Form metallic bonds 6. Alloys (mixture of metals) Noble Gases 1. Group 18 2. Very Stable 3. Used in lighting (neon signs) 4. Full valence shell

Groups The Halogens 1. Group 17 2. -1 charge 3. Many are gases that form covalent molecules 4. As well many form ionic molecules with metals such as salt (NaCl)

Mixed Groups Boron Group 1. All elements in group 13 2. Many are metalloids 3. Aluminum is the most abundant metal in earth’s crust The Carbon Group 1. Group 14 2. Made of non-metals, metalloids, and metals like tin 3. +4 charge 4. Allotropes- different forms of the same element like _____?

More Mixed Groups Nitrogen Group 1. Group 15 2. -3 Charge 3. N 2 is diatomic and used in fertilizers and ammonia 4. Phosphorus also in fertilizers and match heads Oxygen Group 1. Group 16 2. -2 charge 3. O 2 we breath 4. O 3 is ozone 5. Those are allotropes 6. Sulfur is used in paints

Those Bottom Rows Lanthanides 1. Atomic #s 58-71 2. They come from period 6 Actinides 1. Atomic #s 90-103 2. Come from period __?
