2. Journey toward the 9 th Circle of Hell, the 4 th ring Dante notices sinners completely covered with ice under his feet Picture of the sinner under a frozen lake

3. Dante meets Lucifer, Satan, for the first time. Lucifer has three heads and arms that stretch out longer than the giants in the 8 th circle Picture of Lucifer over looking hell

4. Dante sees Lucifer’s mouth holding three different sinners and chewing them but not killing them. These sinners all were traitors. In his center mouth dangled Judas and in his left and right mouths hang Brutus and Cassius. Picture of Lucifer eating sinners

5. Virgil becomes very courageous and climbs onto Lucifer’s body. Virgil grips Lucifer’s frozen tufts of hair and lowers himself and Dante down to Lucifer’s waist. Dante finds that Lucifer’s legs are above his head now. Virgil explains to Dante that since Lucifer was the fallen angel when he fell from heaven he fell headfirst into planet.
