BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Keyboard and mouse  Keyboard and mouse are standard on most PCs for data entry and controlling the computer  Laptops usually have a built-in keyboard with a touchpad for mouse control. You can usually add a keyboard and/or mouse to a laptop using USB

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Sensors  Sensors are used in many automated systems for input  Sensors can detect distance, movement, temperature, pressure, light, etc.

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Touch screen  A touch screen is both input and output  Used on many modern phones, tablets and controls such as bank ATM machines for withdrawing money

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Microphone  A microphone can be used to input sound into a computer  Most PCs do not have one, so a microphone would need to be plugged in to record sound  Most laptops do include a microphone, but they are often poor quality and a lot of people prefer to plug in a better microphone

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Scanner  Scanners are used to copy photographs and documents into a computer system  Most scanners attach using USB

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Digital camera  Digital cameras are used to take photographs which are to be used in computer systems  Most cameras have a memory card slot where a storage card, e.g. SD, can be inserted to hold the photographs  Some cameras have a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth radio connection for transferring photographic data to a computer system  Most cameras can connect with USB to a computer

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Output devices  How many output devices can we identify?

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Output devices  Printers (inkjet, laser, impact)  Speakers  Force feedback devices  Actuators  Screens  Projectors  Robot arms  Other control devices

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Inkjet printers  Inkjet printers are good, general-purpose printers  Usually produce good quality, near-photographic colour prints  Not very good for lots of printing or double-sided printing

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Laser printers  Laser printers are good, general-purpose printers  Often black and white but colour also available  Usually produce good quality, near-photographic colour prints  Good for lots of printing or doubled-sided printing

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Impact printers  Impact printers are fairly slow, noisy and low-quality printers  Can use multi-part stationery so several pages can be printed at once  Good for sales counters where both customer and shop copies are wanted

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Speakers  Speakers are used to get sound out of a computer  Sound can be warning beeps, spoken words or music

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Force feedback devices  Used to give the user more feel in what they are doing  Gaming controllers use this technology to make games more realistic  Medical remote surgery uses this to help the surgeon feel what they are doing

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Actuators  These are small motors controlled by a computer system, often in an automated process such as opening a valve to let more fuel into a heater when the temperature drops

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Screens  Used to see computer output  These are usually separate peripherals from the computer system  Laptops and tablets have built-in screens

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Projectors  Data projectors are used to show a computer display on a large surface, such as a smart board

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Robot arms  Robot arms are controlled by computer systems to do dangerous or repetitive tasks, such as on a production line

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Other control devices  Other control devices are used to make machines such as car engines or microwaves work more efficiently  The outputs from these devices usually control the machine containing the device

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Solid state  SSD (solid-state drive) is a new technology that performs the same functions as a hard disk  SSD drives have no moving parts, so work faster than a hard-disk drive (HDD)  SSD is more expensive than HDD

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Optical media  Optical media use a laser beam to shine on a disk  The beam can be reflected or not reflected to hold a bit of information (1 or 0)  CD and DVD are both optical technologies

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Magnetic media  Hard-disk drives (HDD) use magnetic media as they hold data on a disk surface as millions of spots magnetised to North or South  HDD use a spinning disk to hold data, so are slower than SSD which have no moving parts

BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Multifunctional devices  Touch screen  Input by touching the screen  Output from the screen display  Games controller  Input using the buttons  Output from vibrations to make game play more realistic
