Solid state SSD (solid-state drive) is a new technology that performs the same functions as a hard disk SSD drives have no moving parts, so work faster than a hard-disk drive (HDD) SSD is more expensive than HDD
34
BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Optical media Optical media use a laser beam to shine on a disk The beam can be reflected or not reflected to hold a bit of information (1 or 0) CD and DVD are both optical technologies
35
BTEC First Information and Creative Technology Teaching and Assessment Pack Unit 2: Technology Systems © Pearson Education Ltd 2012. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only. Magnetic media Hard-disk drives (HDD) use magnetic media as they hold data on a disk surface as millions of spots magnetised to North or South HDD use a spinning disk to hold data, so are slower than SSD which have no moving parts
