CULTURE All shared products of human groups (values, physical objects, beliefs, behaviors) Society: a group of interdependent people who have organized in such a way to share a common culture and feeling of unity Society is people, culture is products created by people

MATERIAL VS. NONMATERIAL CULTURE Material culture: physical objects people create and use Ex: cars, books, buildings, clothes, computers, eating utensils, etc. Nonmaterial culture: abstract human creations Ex: religious beliefs, family values, ideas, languages, political and economic systems, rules, skills, etc.

COMPONENTS OF CULTURE Technology: use of objects and rules for use Symbols: an object with a shared meaning or attachment (gesture, objects, sayings, etc.) Language: organization of written and spoken symbols into a standardized system Values: shared beliefs about what is good/bad, right/wrong, desirable/undesirable

COMPONENTS OF CULTURE Values: shared beliefs about what is good/bad, right/wrong, desirable/undesirable Norms-used to enforce cultural values, shared rules of conduct (expectations for behavior) Folkways- norms that describe socially acceptable behavior but do not have great moral significance Mores- norms of socially acceptable behavior that have great moral significance Laws- written rules of conduct enacted and enforced by the government
