Review of the BUS(es) 1 st BUS: ▫Part of Alexander Hamilton’s financial Plan 2 nd BUS: ▫Charted from 1816 – 1836 ▫Constitutionality was upheld in McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) Purpose of the BUSes ▫Provided a storage place for government funds ▫Could help improve the economy

The Election of 1832 President Jackson’s Veto Message was written on July 10, 1832 In November, 1832, the election was between Jackson (Democrat) and Clay (National Republican) ▫The BUS veto was essentially a referendum Jackson destroys Clay in the election (219 – 49) However, the 2 nd BUS is still around for four more years (expires in 1836) “I have now done my duty to my country. If sustained by my fellow citizens, I shall be grateful and happy; if not, I shall find in the motives which impel me ample grounds for contentment and peace.”
