Think Aloud reading strategy What happens? Students or teacher reads a section of text. After each section, the participant makes a reaction— “thinks aloud”—about the text. Participant then writes down that response, reflecting or reacting continually to each response. Types of responses Imagery / visual responses Make connections: – Text to self – Text to world – Text to text Make predictions Stating understanding or indicating confusion

Think Aloud—Dialectical or Double-Entry Journal Notemaking “…I heard a loud popping noise” (744). Notetaking --Maybe the narrator heard someone’s tire blowing up, causing the accident.
