Step One Decide on a Topic Choose a topic on a concept Choose a topic that you can create interest for your audience Choose a topic that you can bring a unique and personal point of view too.

Begin Research You need 3 informative articles that you can prove are trustworthy, truthful, and that are recent. DO NOT USE AN encyclopedia, ask.com, about.com, or wikipedia as a research source Yes, You will be evaluated on the quality of research!

Create your specific purpose statment

Organize your ideas! Do not use a quote or source for your main ideas! The main ideas should come from you – bring your perspective to the main ideas of your speech. Develop your main ideas! You must create texture and depth with your supporting details! CITED SOURCES should be included as part of the Formal Outline! Clearly make a choice on your organizational pattern!

Create your central idea for your speech.

Create your intro! Attention Getter Reveal Topic Connect to Audience State significance – why should we care? State credibility – why do you care? PREVIEW main ideas of speech

Formal Outline MUST BE WRITTEN IN COMPLETE SENTENCES If your main ideas, points and supporting details have not been crafted into coherent and interesting sentences – the very best you can score on the formal outline is an 82 out of 100. 1 sentence per division No paragraphing in the body of the outline (you will lose points for this also)

If you use Keynote – Visual Support Your slides should act as a Visual Support for your points The audience’s focus should be on you and listening to what you are saying Do not let your visual support upstage you – video clips are powerful but should be edited carefully Keep text to a minimum! General rule – we should not be reading but listening. Go to a blank slide when your slide no longer supports what you are talking about
