Culture Lived in villages with 10-50 families. Villages moved about every 10 years. Many villages had a fence of pointed logs surrounding them.

Longhouse Iroquois lived in large houses 50-150 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 15-20 feet high. Several families live in a long house. Fires are built in a row down the middle. http://www.peace4turtleisland.org/pages/longhouse.htm

Work Women did the farming. Men did the hunting. Children helped in all of the work.

Women owned the property and were in charge of discipline. When men married they went to live in the women’s longhouse. Men served on the council which made decisions for the tribe.

Diet A major crop for the Iroquois was corn. They ground up kernels to make flour for bread. Other foods were meat, fish, berries, grapes, nuts, and fruits.
