Early Lifestyle (c. 1550, generalized) Moderate climate, lots of rain, rivers, forests. Lived in wigwams (saplings and bark) Tools of bone or stone tend to gardens (kept close to home, full of corn, beans, squash) o Lakes and rivers = Fishing for food, cattail plants to insulate wigwam, making pots from clay from the riverbank, canoe transportation o Society broken into classes, included a Chief and nobility o Clothing made of animal (deer) hide, decorated with porcupine quills, “wampum” beads/shells, and lots of body paint

Cherokee Animal Dances Animal Dances – Performed by ALL Native Americans (depends on location and culture) Success in hunting, seeking aid from the animal spirit (healing, rain, etc.), honor animal, thank animal for aid or use. Bear Dance – Revered for strength and power, closely related to humans (in shape and caring for young) *Duck Dance – Honored for helping the First Man build mountains -Used both seriously and as entertainment for children! *Raccoon Dance – “Another one of grandma's games to keep the children occupied at family gatherings” (may have been from a mix of cultures due to intermarriages) *Do these remind you of anything??
