Monday, Oct. 12th 1 Bell-ringer: No notebooks/folders today! Agenda: Bell-ringer Science Current Events (any missed from Friday) Stem Cell video Objective: Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function(S.7.LS.2) Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. (S.7.LS.3)

Tuesday, Oct. 13th 2 Bell-ringer: Notebooks open to table of contents. Agenda: Bell-ringer “Stem Cells” notes Objective: Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function(S.7.LS.2) Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. (S.7.LS.3)

Title page 27, Stem Cells Differentiated cells = cannot change into different types of cells; specialized Stem cells = can change into different types of cells, not specialized, and can renew themselves. Our bodies contain many specialized cells that carry out specific functions. These specialized cells are called differentiated cells. Most of these cells, for example, heart or liver cells cannot be changed into different types of cells. However…. A stem cell is undifferentiated; its role in the body in not yet determined. A stem cell can change into different types of cells; including blood cells, brain cells, muscle cells, skin cells and more stem cells, and has the ability to renew themselves.

Stem Cells continued… Types of Stem Cells Embryonic stem cells  These stem cells come from embryos that are three to five days old. They are pluripotent (ploo-RIP-uh-tunt) stem cells; meaning they can divide into more stem cells or can become any type of cell in the body. This versatility allows embryonic stem cells to be used to regenerate or repair diseased tissue and organs. Adult stem cells  These stem cells are found in small numbers in most adult tissues, such as bone marrow or fat. Compared with embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells have a more limited ability to give rise to various cells of the body.

Why is there a controversy about using embryonic stem cells?

Thursday Quiz!! 1.What are stem cells? 2.What are differentiated cells? 3.What is an example of a differentiated cell? 4.What are embryonic stem cells? 5.What are adult stem cells?

Title page 29, Tissues Similar cells that work together for a specific function form a tissue. The human body has four kinds of tissue: connective, epithelial, muscle, and nervous.

Tissues continued… Types of Tissues: Muscle tissue makes up most of an animal's mass. It is made up of cells that contract when they receive signals from the brain. This contraction and relaxation moves the skeleton.

Tissues continued… Signals that are sent to muscle tissue travel through Nervous tissue. The brain, spinal cord, and places where sensations occur are all nervous tissue.

Tissues continued… Connective tissue is found in bones, cartilage, and tendons. Blood is a connective tissue.

Tissues continued… Epithelial tissue is the body covering of an animal, and also lines most internal organs.

Friday, Oct. 15th 19 Bell-ringer: Open notebooks to table of contents. Agenda: Bell-ringer “Organs and organ systems” notes Objective: Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. (S.7.LS.3)

Title page 31, Organs Tissues that work together form organs. – Each organ is made of several kinds of tissues. – An organ performs a major function for the body to keep it alive.

Organ Systems Organs that work together for a specific function form a system.

Major Organ Systems CIRCULATORY: transports oxygen, nutrients, & wastes through the body RESPIRATORY: brings oxygen to the body DIGESTIVE: breaks down food into nutrients and gets them to the blood EXCRETORY: removes wastes from the blood SKELETAL: provides structural support for the body MUSCULAR: produces movement NERVOUS: allows experiences and reactions to the environment REPRODUCTIVE: produces new individuals ENDOCRINE: helps regulate body processes INTEGUMENTARY: protects the body from damage IMMUNE: protects the body against disease
