2 How are girls and boys different?
Girls have sex organs called ovaries

4 Ovaries produced hormones that make a girl’s body grow
in different ways than a boy’s body

5 The two ovaries also store the cells that develop into babies
These cells are called egg cells

6 The female reproductive cells stored in the ovaries
Vocabulary: Egg cells The female reproductive cells stored in the ovaries

7 Females are born with all their eggs inside them
Then when a girl gets old enough, one egg leaves one ovary every month

8 But where does the egg go?
It passes from the ovary into a tube called the fallopian tube

9 It takes about 3 days for the egg to travel down this tube
to an organ called the uterus

10 An organ in the female body where a baby can grow and develop
Vocabulary: uterus An organ in the female body where a baby can grow and develop

11 By this time, tissues lining the uterus have filled with blood
They are ready to hold a developing baby

12 If the egg cell is fertilized, it will stay in the uterus
It will develop into a fetus and grow into a baby

13 A fertilized egg that grows into a baby
Vocabulary: fetus A fertilized egg that grows into a baby

14 If the egg cell is not fertilized,
the egg and the blood from the lining of the uterus are not needed

15 They leave the uterus and flow out of the body through the vagina
Vocabulary: vagina A passageway that leads out of a female’s body

16 The vagina is also called the birth canal
because a baby passes through it when being born

17 The tube a baby passes through when it is born (vagina)
Vocabulary: Birth canal The tube a baby passes through when it is born (vagina)

18 It takes about 5 days for the blood to flow out of the female’s body
The female is having a period

19 The time when blood from the uterus flows out of the female’s body
Vocabulary: period The time when blood from the uterus flows out of the female’s body

20 The blood flow is part of the menstrual cycle
Vocabulary: Menstrual cycle The cycle in the female’s body beginning with the release of the egg cell and ending with the period
