Making it Work: Systems of Accountability
4
What is it?
5
it = schooling
6
Why do we need to make it work?
7
What is a well intentioned firefighter?
8
The job of a school leader is arguably one of the most interrupted jobs anywhere. You are continually bombarded by students, parents, staff, and the mini-crises that occur each day. Because of this, a school leader can invest a tremendous number of hours – and heart and soul – into the work of school without even stepping foot into a classroom. -Bambrick-Santoyo, p. 240
9
What are the 7 levers discussed in Leverage Leadership?
10
Defend Your Time! 7 Levers of Executing Quality Instruction & Culture Instructional Levers – Data-Driven Instruction – Observation & Feedback – Instructional Planning – Professional Development Cultural Levers – Student Culture – Staff Culture – Managing School Leadership Teams

Implementation If time is a leader’s most precious resource, then it is not enough to know how it should be spent; leaders also need to know how to protect it. -Bambrick-Santoyo, p. 252.
17
Implementation Defend Your Time! How do you? – Communication & Vision Setting Discipline to the Calendar Discipline to the SOP “Why we do explains what we do”

Implementation 1. Daily, Weekly, Monthly Priority Setting (Option A) – Review p. 263; 258-9 in Leverage Leadership – Complete “chunking” on p. 262, Table 8.11 2. Calendar Organization (Option B) – Review p. 243-246 in Leverage Leadership – Complete Steps 1-6 Note: LL refers to distributing teacher observations across the leadership team, with our staffing structure this is not needed. Note: Step 6 should encapsulate (as specific to role)—grade book audits, parent call log, attendance, PGP meetings, formal observations, PIP management. 4. Reflect – Align to 7 levers/4 Domain expectation? – Aligned to teacher and admin team expectations?

Closing A stronger school culture means less firefighting; stronger instruction means less time spent on emergency remediation; effective and well-aligned planning means fewer chaotic midyear turnarounds. Ultimately, then, the question is not whether it is feasible for leaders to pursue these systems, but whether they can afford not to. -Bambrick-Santoyo, p. 264
