Dealing with Assimilation, Separation, Integration and Marginalization
A culture in itself has many challenges to work on during its everyday life. It can be a daunting task to meet those challenges or put them on the back burning to get to at a later date. So, having to deal with a added challenge on how a family culture will adjust to living here in the U.S. is one they will have to choose for today's generation and their next.
3
Assimilation A Type of Cultural Adaptation.
The individual does not want to maintain an isolated cultural identity. The central focus in assimilation is not retaining one’s cultural heritage.
4
Assimilation Cont’ Click the link to see video of a cultural assimilation Click the link below to see a metaphor of a challenge of a assimilation in progress. Put yourself in the person shoes of the video running from it or at least trying to.
5
Separation –Two forms of separation
Segregation Separation is initiated and enforced by dominate society U.S. historically had restrictive codes of where various racial and ethnic groups could live Also were they could eat, sit on a bus, go to school and where to go to college The Negro baseball league was formed because of segregation The migrants choose to retain their own culture and avoid interaction with other groups Example of this is the Amish They maintain their own way of life Avoid prolong contact with other groups. Dominate society respects their choice.
6
Integration Occurs when migrants have a interest maintaining their culture Also having a interest in associating with the dominate culture Click link below to see view a American Foreign student getting a feel of what it is like be in a foreign dominate culture and trying to adjust
7
Marginalization Occurs when the individual or group express little interest in maintaining cultural ties with their culture or the dominate group Example of this is Native Americans being forced to live apart from their other nations War brides – A friend of mine went through this with his Korean wife. She could not adjust to being here in the U.S. and had no one of here culture to adjust with. She divorced him, left their daughter and went home back to her parents in Korea
8
Cultural Hybridity Where migrants and their family combine the four different modes when dealing with the host society They may desire: Economic assimilation (via employment) Linguistic integration (bilingualism) Social separation (marrying from same group) This produces not the melting pot society but a Salad society
