1 PAL Physical Activity Leaders

2 Congratulations Great work becoming a PAL This is a chance for you to be a good role model for the younger kids at school, design & plan your own physical activity sessions & most of all……….. have a lot of FUN!

3 What does this mean? The PAL team will...  Operate a Physical Activity Programme at lunchtimes  Assist duty teacher’s with monitoring students playing Can you think of more things to go here which would be helpful to your school.??? You’ll be expected to…  Demonstrate fair play & positive encouraging attitudes  Work hard to do your best at all times.  Help others where you can & answer any questions  Avoid putting people down or bullying  Recognise when others are playing well & are getting involved  Follow the Code of Conduct  Participate

4 Working with Kids Outdoors Sun - face the kids away from the sun so it’s not in their face, especially when talking to them Wind- keep the wind behind you when you are talking to the kids so that they can always hear you Surface - always check the playing surfaces before setting up activities: E.g. glass, stones, holes

5 Crowd Control If you have a disruptive student...  Compliment someone who is behaving well & tell them they can be first to do something  Ask the disruptive person to change his behaviour or he will have to sit down in ‘time out’ until they have calmed down  Ask that person to stand near you & keep them within your sight & hearing  Find the duty teacher & explain the problem

6 Voice Speak slowly & clearly Get their attention first Make eye contact Vary the tone & volume Be concise Ask simple questions Smile Always face the group

7 Demonstration Perform skill correctly Use students or groups Make it clear Has to be clearly seen Discuss what to look for Ask questions at end

14 Organisation ►Plan the activity using a ‘Game Plan’ sheet. ►Make sure you have all the correct equipment ready. ►Have a whistle ready to use. ►Set up the activity before the students arrive. ►Make some boundaries so other students stay out of your area. ►Know how you are going to group the teams. ►Know the rules of the game & explain to the students before playing. ►Ask them if they have any questions before you start. ►Finish with enough spare time to pack up equipment. ►Thank everyone for participating. ►After the game pack up all the equipment & return to the shed. ►Report to the duty teacher to say how it went.
