Solar and STP with AstroGrid Silvia Dalla School of Physics & Astronomy, University of Manchester A PPARC funded project
2
AstroGrid aims within Solar System science 1.Facilitate data retrieval and analysis across traditional Solar System ‘boundaries’ (e.g. solar / heliospheric / magnetospheric / ionospheric) → HelioScope. 2.Provide a framework for making models and applications available to the community. Feed real data as input to models. 3.Make available easy-to-use science services. Eg: Solar Movie Maker and CTIP model. 4.Facilitate multi-instrument, large dataset work. Time Cross Matching tool.
3
HelioScope First version of HelioScope working: VSO data + CDAW Solar image visualisation with Aladin
4
Topcat time-series Stackplot capability added Topcat will identify a time field containing ISO8601 time strings, eg ‘2002-07-28 00:00:00’ and will automatically convert to numeric value. Capability to zoom in on time axis, define subsets. Votable field needs to have unit=‘iso-8601’ or UCD starting with ‘time’
5
Solar System community and AstroGrid Positive reactions to HelioScope demos at MIST/UKSP meeting (April 2006). Several people are running the CTIP model using AstroGrid. Interest in using AstroGrid to identify times of multi- instrument high cadence coverage of the Sun. Time-series visualisation with Topcat also well received.
6
Current developments Ionospheric radar dataset (SuperDarn) at Leicester being linked up. This data will be passed as input to a new version of the CTIP model. Birmingham helioseismology dataset (Bison) Magnetometer data from Lancaster (SAMNET) Using Topcat time series capabilities: multi-instrument studies involving these datasets and RAL UKSSDC
7
IVOA update Generally, interest was shown in making sure that solar system requirements for standards are taken into account. STAP (Simple Time-range Access Protocol) presented. Key issue is take up of this (or similar) protocol within the Solar System community. Time UCDs – need for a better range of UCD words for time has been passed on and a new proposal for time branch will be circulated. A standard way to identify string time fields in Votables was agreed – this will be done by specifying: unit=‘iso-8601’.
8
Future work Improvements to HelioScope, especially links to more datasets. (eg Madrigal archive) Promoting STAP within Solar System community. New solar missions: Solar-B (MSSL instrument: EIS) and STEREO (RAL instrument: HI). UK archives for entire datasets are planned (MSSL and RAL): work has started to make data available via AstroGrid. Key solar datasets for cycle 4. Also for STEREO: models running on AG. STEREO
