Paraphrase This is when you read something and you put it into your own words. However, you do not interpret. At this stage you are just translating.
5
ONLY WORKING ON PARAPHRASE SKILL We are going to go through “To HIs Coy Mistress” We are going to paraphrase every few lines
6
“To His Coy Mistress” Had we but world enough, and time, This coyness, Lady, were no crime We would sit down and think which way To walk and pass our long love's day. Thou by the Indian Ganges' side The speaker starts off by telling his mistress that if they had all of the time in the world her “coyness” would be no crime. They would sit and think and spend all the time they wanted doing whatever they wanted. They would hang by the Indian Ganges (this has meaning, but we are not doing F in the acronym yet)
7
“To His Coy Mistress” Thou by the Indian Ganges' side Shouldst rubies find: I by the tide Of Humber would complain. I would Love you ten years before the Flood, And you should, if you please, refuse Till the conversion of the Jews. We would be by the river’s side and find treasures. I would love you forever and if it made you happy-love you before the Jews converted (obviously two allusions in this section to Noah and to possibly the Inquisition or an earlier time)
8
“To His Coy Mistress” My vegetable love should grow Vaster than empires, and more slow; An hundred years should go to praise Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze; Two hundred to adore each breast, But thirty thousand to the rest; An age at least to every part, My love would grow bigger than empires yet slow enough to spend the time to adore an love every part of her.
9
Now it is your turn... You are going to work with a partner and take apart one of two poems. When you are done, you are going to meet with others who had your same poem and create a Master paraphrase to share with the class.
10
Share the Paraphrases Share them and we will do a Gallery Walk either now or tomorrow, so that you can take down information to help you understand these poems.
