1 Daily Life in the Cities

2 Education Few children had access to public education in the early 1800s. To educate the public, states began to pass compulsory education laws – These laws required parents to send children to school.

3 New Methods of Education Reformers wanted children to learn the 3 R’s (Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic) in new ways. Reformer, John Dewey, proposed that children “learn by doing.” Other reformers stressed the need to teach proper behavior, civic loyalty, and American cultural values.

4 Publishing With more of an emphasis on education, newspapers and literature became more important. – WHY?

5 Popular Journalism Newspaper circulation skyrocketed during the early 1900s. This created “newspaper wars” between publications like Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World and William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal. To gain readers, both papers practiced sensational reporting called yellow journalism. “It was all yellow!!”

7 Leisure Time More and more Americans sought to escape the crowdedness of urban living. In 1857, Frederick Olmsted designed Central Park in NYC. The success of the park sparked the City Beautiful movement

8 Sports Baseball exploded onto the scene in the late 1800s and quickly became a success. Baseball is known as America’s pastime.

9 Sports Football became popular in the late 1800s; however, the sports brutality led some people to petition Congress to have it banned. New equipment and rule changes ensured football’s survival. Violent??? How could this play turn out bad for him????

10 Sports Basketball became very popular with students. The game was invented by James Naismith.

11 Sports Boxing became a cheap form of entertainment for urban dwellers. Prize fighting began to gain popularity in the late 1800s. Don’t mess with me punk!!!

12 Entertainment The theater became an increasing form of urban entertainment. One type of theater, vaudeville, gained a huge following. Vaudeville was a type of variety show that featured a wide selection of short performances.

13 Entertainment A new form of music known as ragtime proved popular with audiences. It was more fast paced and foot stomping than traditional music. The most well-known ragtime musician was Scott Joplin, AKA the King of Ragtime
