R. Henderson 2/24/08 Lesson # 8 2 Read Galatians 3:1-18 Free from the Law 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 5 So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 10 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO PERFORM THEM." 11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "THE RIGHTEOUS MAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH." 12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, "HE WHO PRACTICES THEM SHALL LIVE BY THEM." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE"— 17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise

R. Henderson 2/24/08 Lesson # 8 3 3:2 - One cannot receive the Holy Spirit by the law 3:3 - One cannot be made perfect (complete) by the works of the laws by the flesh 3:5 - God cannot abundantly supply the Holy Spirit and His ministry by the law 3:10 - If one is under law he/she is under curse 3:11 - No man is justified (declared righteous) by law 3:12 - The law is not out of faith (and without faith it is impossible to please God) 3:13 - Christ had to die to redeem us from the curse of the law 3:17 - The law could not annul or abolish God’s covenant – it had zero impact 3: 18 - Our inheritance of 1. Righteousness - Christ in us 2. Our being complete in Christ 3. Blessed with every spiritual blessing – cannot come from the law Free from the Law Important points about the Law from Galatians 3:1-18* * Hal Molloy April 1997

R. Henderson 2/24/08 Lesson # 8 4 Read Galatians 3:19-26 19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. added - prostithēmi - "to add, or to place beside" (the primary meaning), Romans 5:20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, “ until the seed would come” – who is the seed ? Free from the Law

R. Henderson 2/24/08 Lesson # 8 5 20 Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one. 21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:20-26 Free from the Law

R. Henderson 2/24/08 Lesson # 8 6 Free from the Law What is the Christian relationship to the Law 1.We are not under the Law Romans 6:14 -15 Gal 4:4-5 Gal 5:18 2.We are free from the Law Romans 8:2 Act 13:38-39 3.We have died to the Law Romans 7:1-6

R. Henderson 2/24/08 Lesson # 8 7 Free from the Law We are not under the Law Romans 6:14 -15 14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! Galatians 4:4-5 4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons Galatians 5:18 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.

R. Henderson 2/24/08 Lesson # 8 8 We are free from the Law Romans 8:2 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. We have died to the Law Romans 7:4-6 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
