1. Warm Up You will be given 5 minutes to reflect on the following: Over the past week we have discussed numerous different Native American Tribes, think back to the lessons from last week, and identify, three things you have learned since the beginning of the unit, and three things you would still like to learn as we move forward. After 5 minutes, you will turn and talk with your table.

2. Reminders….  Open notebook test will be at the end of the week. Spend some time at home organizing yourself so you are prepared.  Current events due FRIDAY.  We will continue the positive behavior chart all week. The winners will receive a prize next week.

3. Objective Students will be able to identify the culture and lifestyle of the Western Peoples.

4. Western North America What states are located out west? What is the region like? What else might you know about the western region? SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER….(mountainous/flat/both, what ocean borders the Western coast, what is the climate like, etc.) (Turn and talk)

6. Western Peoples Lifestyles of the early peoples varied depending on where in the Western region they lived. -Mild climate -Dependable food sources Favorable conditions helped groups in this region thrive.

7. Northwestern Tribes Makes up what is now Canada, Southern Alaska, Washington, and Oregon The tribes include the Tlingit, Haida, and Chinook Depended on the forest and the sea for food and materials needed for living *What might the forest provide? *What might the rivers provide? (Turn and talk to discuss)

8. Northwestern Tribes Forest -Wood for houses -Canoes -tree bark to make baskets and clothing Rivers -Salmon *Salmon was preserved by smoking it over fires

9. Plateau Region Area between the Cascade Mountains and the Rocky Mountains. -Nez Perce and Yakima tribes Fished the rivers, Hunted deer in forest, gathered roots and berries. Lived in Earthen House

11. Great Basin -Between Nevada and the Rocky Mountains lived the Ute and the Shoshone -Soil was too hard and rocky for farming, so people had to travel in search of food -Hunted and gathered small game, pine nuts, berries, roots, and some insects! -They crafted temporary shelters out of branches

12. Guided Practice As a class, lets fill out our graphic organizer for the Western people.

13. Independent Practice Reflect on the following question in a 5-7 sentence paragraph: How was geography a factor in the differences between the tribes of the Western Region? Can someone interpret the question in their own words for the class?

14. Group Work Your group will be assigned one region the Western Area (Pacific Northwest, Plateau, Great Basin).  Through a drawing visualize what life was like for those tribes. Be Creative as possible!!!! Example: (Example, for the pacific Northwest, you may draw a canoe in the water, or for the Great Basin they you may show people traveling to find food).

15. Exit Ticket Fill out an exit ticket answering the following: What are some environmental factors that lead to differences in lifestyles?

16. Homework What was the difference between the habitats of the Rocky Mountain People and The Great Basin People? What was the main food source for the Pacific Northwest People How did the Great Basin People get their food? Name one way geography impacted the tribes in each of the three regions (Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains, Great Basin)
