Main Idea Through the study of human and animal behavior, people can discover psychological principles that have the potential to enrich the lives of humans.

Overview of Psychology Psychology – the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Everything that people think, feel, and do.

Basic Science vs. Applied Science Basic Science – studying for the sake of studying Applied Science – studying to be able to accomplish something.

Goals of Psychology 1. Description – Gather information about the behavior being studied and present what is known. 2. Explanation – Explain why people/animals behave the way they do. 3. Prediction – Through their study, a psychologist will attempt to predict what a person/animal will do next. 4. Influence – Use what they know. Basic Science – Research and Reveal Applied Science – Use psychology to solve problems.
