Journals, Spring 2016 Remember, journals will be collected every 10 prompts!

In order to receive full credit, ALL journals MUST Be written in MLA format (you do not have to skip lines) Include a title (which is the journal number) Include the date (written in MLA format) Be written on separate pages (front/back is fine)

11 January 2016 Journal #1 Based on the research you have done in the library, write a brief summary explaining the importance of your pre-assigned literary period. Include information about the key ideas, works, and authors of the time period.

12 January 2016 Journal #2 What is the difference between a descriptive essay and an argumentative essay? Why is it important to provide evidence when writing an essay? (Provide 3-5 sentences) Explain what you know about Puritans. What do you think Puritans have to do with American literature? (Provide 3-5 sentences) (ALL of you should have 2 lies and 1 truth. We will pick about 10 of you to play today. Be prepared…you never know if you’ll be the one we call on!)

13 January 2016 Journal #3 Define sermon (use your phone for a literal definition of this literary form. Then, look at the various translations of Deuteronomy 32:35. In 3-5 sentences, explain what you think this quote means and how you think the Puritans would have reacted to it. In other words, would they believe this scripture to be literal, or would they have translated it to meet their needs? 15 January 2016 Journal #5 On Monday, the nation will observe the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. What pieces of literature (including oratory speeches and written pieces) did he write that inspired people to change their way of thinking? How did he set the tone for the ideologies of today’s Americans? Answer this in a complete paragraph.
