Lee Beresford NHS Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) CCGs = local GPs Responsible for planning and paying for most local NHS services Wakefield and North Kirklees CCGs are leading ‘Meeting the Challenge’ consultation Consultation – about changes to local health services especially at our three hospitals: Dewsbury, Pinderfields and Pontefract

Proposed changes 1.Maternity (births) – extending the specialist unit at Pinderfields 2.Children’s inpatients – bring them all together at Pinderfields 3.A&E and unplanned care – developing specialist trauma centre at Pinderfields 4.Surgery – separating out planned and unplanned operations at Pinderfields 5.More services in the community

4. Why the changes? Care has changed dramatically More services outside hospital including patients’ own homes Constantly improving techniques Shorter times in hospital Specialist centres save more lives Separating planned and unplanned services gives better results Not enough doctors to staff all sites 24/7 More demand Need to make better use of money and sustain them for the future

Summary : if you live in the Wakefield area (contd) If you needed care in an emergency : – most care would still be provided locally at Pinderfields and Pontefract (A&E, assessment) – emergency day care would mean fewer people needed to stay in hospital If you were very sick, needed specialist treatment or had complex needs, you would go to Pinderfields If you needed a planned operation, you could choose to be treated at Dewsbury or Pontefract More of your care would be provided by consultants and specialist trained nurses
