1
The Mystery of the Kingdom Christ the King and His Kingdom, the Church
2
Why the genealogy??
3
The family line begins… Scripture: “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” –Mt 1:1 Significance Son of David is the first TITLE of Jesus, highlighting its importance above chronology. Son of David = heir to throne
4
And crescendos to glory… Scripture “Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, Jesse the father of David the King.” –Mt. 1:2-6 Significance David and Jesus are the only individuals given titles. –Jesus = Christ or “Messiah” – David = the King Mentioning “David the king” brings back memories of the glory days.
5
Then falls to misery… Scripture “David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph. Asaph became the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah. Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz became the father of Hezekiah. Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah. Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.” –Mt 1:6-11 Significance Babylonian exile happened in 587 B.C. This was when their glory ceases and life became MISERABLE in exile.
6
But ends with the greatest news! Scripture “After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel the father of Abuid. Abuid became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah.” –Mt 1:12-17 Significance Zerubbabel is the LAST Davidic descendent named in Scripture. Pinnacle = Jesus who is the Messiah. –Jesus means “God saves” –Messiah/Christ = “Anointed One”
7
What’s Matthew highlighting? Scripture “Thus, the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations.” –Mt 1:17 Significance Fourteen was the numerical value for the name of David (dwd; d=4, w=6) David himself is the 14 th name. Jesus is the LONG EXPECTED KING
8
Numerical Significance How many sets of 14 do we see?? What is significant about that number?? What is this telling us? Matthew is introducing Jesus as the “New ____________”?
9
Role Call! Activity Receive your “identity” and prop. Order yourselves using the Geneaology. Refrain for “Role Call!” This is David’s family (yeah!) Heirs to the throne (yeah!) You’re in the blood line (yeah!) Let Your name be known (yeah!) ROLE CALL!
10
Role Call! Activity - summary You are in the bloodline! We could keep singing verse after verse, generation after generation, until we reach YOU – as a part of the bloodline, you share in the inheritance! The inheritance is eternal life!
