Hurricanes, Blizzards, Lake-Snow Effect Notes Hurricanes: forms over warm ocean water near equator; rapid evaporation of large amounts of warm ocean water produces rising humid air (mT). Clouds form with high winds and heavy rain near eye wall. Surface winds move counterclockwise inwards; between 0°-30°N, move NW due to trade winds; between 30°-60°N move NE due to prevailing SW winds; Why do hurricanes die? loss of energy over land or they move into cooler ocean waters. DAMAGE: coastal flooding and wind damage SAFETY: evacuate area, go to higher ground.

Hurricanes, Blizzards, Lake- Snow Effect Notes Blizzard: precipitation when atmosphere is cold due to jet stream ( = invisible river of cold air in the lower stratosphere); heavy snowfall with high wind speed; SAFETY: go into shelter; check home heating oil; have generator for electric power, store blankets, food, fuel (gas, oil, coal, wood).

BLIZZARD

Lake-Snow Effect (near Great Lakes of US): warm lake water produces warm humid (mT) air which is less dense; in the US, weather moves from west to east due to the prevailing SW winds (30°-60°N); so, the mT air rises and cools with altitude producing clouds; since atmosphere is cold, heavy snowfall occurs. SAFETY: go into shelter; keep warm by storing blankets, food, fuel (gas, oil, coal, wood), have electric generator.
