What is the purpose of the notebook? The purpose of the interactive notebook is to enable you to be a creative independent thinker and writer. Interactive notebooks will be used for class notes as well as for other activities where you will be asked to express your own ideas and process the information presented by this class. You will be creating your own personalized textbook. What materials do I need? Spiral notebook that includes the following: Either 1 large (5 subject) or 2 medium (3 subject) spiral notebooks for the semester) - college ruled paper- plastic cover - perforated pages Colored pencils or markers (24) Clear contact paper/ packing tape (not scotch tape) Glue Sticks (need daily) Plastic or paper tabs that you can add to pages (not the post-it type) How will my notebook be organized? There will be 2 sides – Left side and Right side. What goes on the the Left side of my notebook? The Left side of your notebook is for many different activities, including pre-op prep activities (warm-up activities) and post-op check ups (homework). This side should be the place where all of your creative and artistic inklings come bursting forth!! Left side activities will ask you to demonstrate your understanding of new ideas. You will be able to reorganize your information here as well as express opinions and feelings about your new knowledge. This side will allow you to demonstrate critical thinking skills, which health care workers must have. What goes on the the Right side of my notebook? The Right side of your notebook is for class and reading notes. As you take notes, structure them so that key ideas are clear and supported by examples from either class instruction, discussions, or reading assignments. Cornell Notetaking is strongly encouraged. The Right side will be used to place handouts with new information. What happens if I lose my notebook? Your notebook should be your pride and joy in your medical class. People in medical professions cannot do their jobs without the proper instruments and you cannot be successful in this class without your notebook. Plus it is a great organizational tool. Take pride in your work. If you lose your notebook, you need to see me immediately. I will allow some makeup work on the notebook for partial credit. Plus, notebooks will be checked, and your notebook is worth 25% of your 6 weeks grade.

How will my notebook be graded? Notebooks will be checked for 2 notebook grades each six weeks. There will also be periodic checks, without prior notice, for quiz grades throughout the year. All class notes and notebook assignments should be included, even for days you are absent. You are responsible for getting and completing all assignments you miss! An important part of your notebook is visual appearance. Your notebook should be neat!! Each entry should be titled, dated, and numbered. Before notebooks are collected, I will tell you about 3 required assignments that we will grade. This allows you to make them look their best. Next, you will have the opportunity to choose 3 different assignments. You will be asked for page numbers and dates and will be given an opportunity to give yourself a grade on these 6. Keep in mind, you are not guaranteed that grade. You will also be given a chance to comment on your notebook. On the due date, I will select 4 additional assignments (for 10 total assignments). If your parent or guardian also grades your notebook you will be eligible for up to 10 extra credit points. Please make sure your parent does not select a page that has already been selected either by you or as a required page! See the Notebook Evaluation Form for guidance. How should the notebook be set up? The front cover of your notebook is yours to decorate. The cover should show who you are and what you like. Include pictures of yourself, friends, family, or your favorite celebrity. You need to decorate the entire cover. This makes your notebook yours and different from your fellow classmates’. You should cover your front cover once decorated, with clear contact paper or clear packing tape (the wide type, not scotch tape.) Pictures need to be appropriate for school. The first page of your notebook needs to demonstrate what medical career you are interested in. This must include a picture of that career and five facts related to the career. These facts could include job duties, characteristics needed, places where you can get education or training, etc. You must answer this question on this page: “If I could be any health care worker I would be a _____________ because_________” This page will also need to be covered with clear contact paper or clear packing tape. This page and the front cover count as a test grade! They are both due ____________________________. Next comes the Table of Contents. You need to keep 5-7 pages blank for your table of contents. Each assignment should be included with the page numbers provided. Notebook Guidelines (with your signature and your parents) will be your first assignment listed. Therefore, this will be page 1. Please attach it only at the top so you can flip to the back if needed for reference when you are putting your notebook together. I suggest you make Classroom Procedures your Page 2. Before each unit, you will be required to create a unit page. This will be placed on a right-hand page and you will include the Unit Question, Unit Number, and Unit Title. It will allow you to separate each unit and be able to access your information more quickly. You will be asked to use the 5-5-5 Rule. This rule requires you to have at least 5 colors, 5 pictures, and 5 facts about the unit. These pages will have tabs and will also be covered in contact paper or wide clear tape. This is a great opportunity to showcase your artsy side. You are also required to answer the unit question as best as possible, even if you have to guess. By the end of the unit, every student will be able to answer the unit question with support. Keep in mind, many of them will not have a right or wrong answer. Unit pages count as a quiz grade. Directly behind the unit page you may include the unit grade sheet. If you keep your grades from that unit on this page, you will have immediate access to your grades. For visual learners, I will have a sample notebook for you to look at in class. I have read and reviewed these guidelines. ______________________________________ __________________________________________ Student’s Signature DateParent’s Signature Date
