Reading Strategies How to understand what you read

Before Reading Preview text by looking at pictures, tables, graphs, charts, captions, headings, subheadings, etc. Predict what is the story about based on what you previewed Connect to background, if given

During Reading Skim for words that you do not know. Look up what they mean or determine what they mean by context or word attack skills Summarize paragraphs to better understand what they are about. Connect to self, others, texts, world Ask questions Make predictions of what will happen throughout; Infer what is happening by examining what you know

After reading Summarize the text. Tell who, what, when, where, why, and how Analyze the parts of the story (character, setting, plot, theme, pov) or elements of nonfiction (main idea, supporting details) and how the parts work together as a whole Synthesize by thinking about the text and its larger significance. How can you extend it to some universal aspect of life? Reflect on its meaning. Connect to yourself, others, text, or world. Evaluate the text by critiquing: was it good, believable, credible, captivating, etc.
