Strengthening Workplace Communication By Domonique Harris BUS 226 Presentation October 16, 2013

Purpose Information communicated in our workplace must be communicated correctly and effectively. - Ask yourself questions. If you are the sender of the message, ask yourself, “How am I relaying this message?” What is my tone? How is my delivery? Is my message understandable? Things that make us go hmmm…

Managers and Employees Managers - A two man team of managers should rate the communication score of selected managers to ensure proper communication. We want to find out if the message was relayed the way it should have been? Employees - A two-man team will also rate their communicative score. If they are the sender, how was the message sent? If they are on the receiving end, how was the message received?

Information is delivered incorrectly and ineffectively. Information is received incorrectly and ineffectively. Communication in the workplace is poor for these two reasons:

Self Rating for Managers Managers can rate their overall effectiveness of their own communcatio n. Self Empowerment to Communicate with Integrity Improvements Performance

Self Rating for Employees Did I understand the message that was given? Was it legible? Was the message clearly written and/or spoken? Am I communicating with integrity? Are there improvements in my performance?

Communication in the Workplace is Essential

Case Study Are our messages being transferred clearly? Manager 1 tells Manager number 2 that there will be a meeting at 8am in the conference room. Those who attend the meeting are not to have their cell phones on them in the meeting, regardless of whether the call be for business within the company, returning an email, or what have you. This meeting is a strict meeting where cell phones are prohibited. Manager 1 tells Manager 2 that the meeting will be focused on the company’s e-mail system, knowing that cell phones will be prohibited, fails to mention that cell phones are prohibited leaving Manager 2 to think that it’s okay to bring their cell phone into the meeting. Was Manager 1 communicating clearly with Manager 2? Manager 1 did not successfully communicate with Manager 2. Although communication was passed informing Manager 2 about the meeting this morning, Manager 1 failed to inform Manager 2 that cell phones will be prohibited, where Manager 2 believes that bringing their cell phone will be efficient for handling business since the meeting is concerning the company email system.
