Objective: Identify intervals on which functions increase, decrease or is constant. Locate relative maxima or minima. Use piecewise functions. Warm up 1.Determine the domain and range of the function. Find F(- 3). a. b.
2
Example 1 a.Describe increasing, decreasing, or constant intervals. b.What is the absolute maximum? When does it occur?
4
Example 2 State the intervals in which the function is increasing, decreasing or constant. a. b.
6
Example 3 Use the graph to find: a.Relative maxima. b.Relative minima. c.Domain d.Absolute maximum. e.Absolute minimum.
7
Summary A function is neither increasing nor decreasing at a point. Parenthesis are used when describing these intervals. Always look at graph from left to right. To describe increasing, decreasing or constant intervals use x-values. For max or min look at y-values.
