Diversity Diversity is about treating everyone fairly and with equal respect.

Equality Equality legislation protects people against discrimination, harassment and victimisation because they have or are perceived to have or are associated with someone who has a protected characteristic (ie a particular religious belief, a disability etc)

Prejudice To cope with the complexity of the world our brain automatically categorise things. As soon as we meet someone we categorise them on the basis of gender, race, age and so on. We make assumptions from our previous knowledge of the group they belong to.

Prejudice Is a thought or an attitude, ‘discrimination’ is the expression of that thought or attitude. Negative consequences Stereotypes and prejudices can often be incorrect! Our behaviour and attitudes can support or damage an inclusive environment.

Defining ‘Inclusion’ In pairs write a definition (i.e. a sentence) on the sticky note and place on the side of the white board Using the discussion & key words write your own definition in your handout

Integration versus Inclusion Why is inclusion better than integration On the whole inclusion involves more positive action than integration which can be a passive process Check out the inclusion charter and note down 3 ‘actions’ the charter states that are part of promoting inclusion – 5mins

Theory to Practice In pairs take one of the children identified and make suggestions (min of 3) as to how they could be included in the classroom Hint: Think about access, language, communication, curriculum Check out your ideas on the AUP practitioner handout 10 mins.

Learning Check- Think outside the box! What are the benefits of these strategies and others for the child and the setting as a whole Inclusion is a good idea because……… (complete the sentence taking into account how inclusion may benefit all)

Reality check! Why is inclusion such an issue – watch the video clip on Nathan and make notes on how his parents view inclusion? What do you think – any experiences from placement (good or not so good!)?

The great debate! Get together in groups and draw up a list of either advantages or challenges in relation to inclusion – write out on flip chart -10 mins. Hint: You could scan some of the info. at the back of the handout to help you Feedback!
