1 The Hawaiian Adventure Tahniyat and Rebecca’s Kite

2 How We Made our Box Kite (Step by Step) YOU WILL NEED 4 wooden or plastic sticks (36 inches in length) 4 wooden or plastic sticks (14 inches in length) Fabric- lightweight Tape String Kite String Patience

3 Step One Measure 4 wooden sticks 36 inches in length. Then 4 sticks 14 inches in length. These sticks will be called spars from now on.

4 Step Two Take two of your 14’ inch spars and bind them together in an X shape using string or tape. Do the same for the other two 14’ inch spars

5 Step Three Measure 6 inches from the top and bottom of the four 36’ spars and make a mark there.

6 Step Four Connect the two X’s to the 36’ Spars at the 6 inch mark.. The spars should connect at a 90 degree angle and create a rectangular prism

7 Step Four (continued) Your Kite Frame should look something like these pictures!

8 Step Five Measure and cut out two pieces of fabric- 48’ by 11’

9 Step Six Attach the fabric to your frame, one at the top and one at the bottom. Tape the fabric down to the four spars

10 Step Seven Measure a piece of string fourteen inches across and attach it to your kite. Look at diagram below.

11 Step Eight Now you should attach your kite string in the center of the 14’ string you just cut.

12 Why Our Kite Flies The forces that help the kite fly include gravity, lift, thrust and drag. Each have an important role that help the kite achieve height. Gravity contributes because as the kite is lighter, it can more easily be lifted off the ground and in to the air compared to heavier ones. we used light,tearfear plastic for the material and the lightest dowels we could find. So this should allow our kite to have a higher chance of flying. Lift allows the kite to stay in the air by resisting the gravity force. When the air pressure below the kite is lower compared to the pressure above the kite, the kite is able to fly and stay high in the air. We made a design that should allow the air speed to be lower in the bottom faster in the top and if you do that the kite will move. Lift is produced when the top and bottom of the kite have a difference in the rate of which the air is passing through. Thrust allows the kite to move across the air.Another reason why a kite flies is because of the thrust which is produces when we hold the string of the kite in place as the wind move across it. The tail allowed the kite to fly even better, because while the kite is in the air it helps in redirect into the correct direction of the wind to allow it to fly longer, higher and better.

13 Log Sheet May 17 th Success The box kite did not fly very high, but stayed in the air for longer periods of time May 18 th Success The kite again flew well! The winds were better around 6pm and made the kite fly very high May 19 th FAILURE The kite’s frame was damaged in my sister’s car and in class it did not fly. May 20 th Success We made a new kite, a diamond kite which flew extremely well even in moderate winds!
