Ratios and Unit Rates

*Vocabulary Review* What is a ratio? A ratio is a comparison of two numbers by division. ̶17 out of 20 students, or What is a rate? A rate is a special type of ratio comparing two quantities with different units. – Driving 120 miles in 2 hours, or What is a unit rate? A unit rate is a rate that is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1 unit. – Driving 120 miles in 2 hours, or

Example 1: Marah biked 24 miles in 4 hours. If she traveled at a constant speed, how many miles did she ride in 1 hour? What you are comparing. Substitute in the values given for each quantity. Since a unit rate has a denominator of 1 unit, divide the numerator and denominator by 4. Marah biked 6 miles per hour.

Example 2: A 12-pack of Gatorade costs $13.44. What is the unit price per bottle? What you are comparing. Substitute in the values given for each quantity. Divide the numerator and denominator by 12 to find the unit rate. The unit price is $1.12 per bottle.

Example 3: The price of three different bags of dog food are shown in the table to the right. Which bag has the lowest price per pound? Try writing a model of what you are comparing. For the 3.5 lb bag, The 7 pound bag is the least expensive at $1.35 per pound Dog Food Prices Size of bag (lbs) Price ($) 3.54.83 79.45 2027.20 For the 7 lb bag, For the 20 lb bag,

GCF AND LCM

*Vocabulary Review* What is the Greatest Common Factor? Greatest Common Factor, or GCF is the greatest factor that divides two numbers -The GCF can also be one of the numbers that you are finding the GCF with What is the Least Common Multiple? Least Common Multiple, or LCM is the least common multiple that is the smallest multiple of both

Example 4: What is the GCF of 48 and 16? (Use the factor tree if needed) GCF= 16

Example 5: What is the LCM of 45 and 5? LCM= 45

Good Luck! You will do just fine! *10 more minutes of studying is the difference from an A and a B*
