1904 Pablo Neruda was born on July 12, 1904 Pablo Neruda was born Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto in Parral, a small town in central Chile. His father, don José del Carmen Reyes Morales, was a poor railway worker. Rosa Basoalto de Reyes, Neruda's mother, was a schoolteacher, who died of tuberculosis when Neruda was an infant. http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/neruda.htm

1916 At the age of 12 he met the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, who encouraged his literary efforts. The American poet Walt Whitman was a major influence to his work. Neruda kept Whitman’s portrait on his beside table because he was so inspired by him. http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/neruda.htm

B ETWEEN 1927-1935 The government put him in charge of a number of honorary consulships, which took him to Burma, Ceylon, Java, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and Madrid. His poetic production during that hard period included the collection of poems, Residencia en la Tierra (1933). 1945 Neruda was elected senator of the Republic, also joining the Communist party of Chile. Due to his protests against Presidents Gonzalez Videla’s repressive policy against striking miners in 1947, he had to live underground in his own country for two years.
