2 Objective:  Estimate the solutions to problems involving fractions and mixed numbers by rounding and using compatible numbers. Why? To make sure that when you actually multiply, you can be sure that your answers are reasonable.

3 California State Standards MR 2.0 – Students use strategies, skills, and concepts in finding solutions.

4 Vocabulary Estimate– – To find an approximate value. If more than ½, round up. If less than ½, keep value the same. Product- To multiply Rounding- – If a number, a whole or a fraction, is greater than or equal to 5 or ½, round up to the nearest next whole number. – If a number, a whole or a fraction, is less than or equal to 5 or ½, keep the number the same.

5 How to Estimate Products of Fractions 1. Determine whether the fractions are more or less than ½. If more, round whole number up. If less, keep whole number the same. 2. Round each mixed number to the nearest whole number. 3. Multiply the whole numbers 4. Check your work 4 7/8 x 18 ¼ 7/8 > ½ ¼ < ½ 4 → 5 18 = 18 5 x 18 ≈ 90
