B.1 Properties of Water Dancing Raisins Will it float?

Water We drink it, wash with it, swim in it, and sometime grumble when it falls from the sky But, water is one of the rarest and most unusual substances in the universe!

What is “matter”? Anything that has mass and takes up space Water is matter All matter has physical and chemical properties

What is a chemical property? Observed when changed into a new substance Must have a chemical reaction Examples: Flammability, reactivity, does the substance react with water, acids/bases, or oxygen

What is a physical property? Can be observed without changing the identity of the substance Most properties are physical Examples: color, boiling point, density

Water’s physical properties… Are a result of water being polar Polarity – having two ends or poles –Like a magnet has N and S –Like the Earth has N and S –Water has + and -

Physical Properties of Water 1. Density – mass to volume ratio mass (g) = Density volume (mL) Can also be expressed as: g/cm 3

More about density Mass = the amount of “stuff” Volume = space filled by the “stuff” What happens if there is an increase in mass while the volume remains constant? –Can of pop demo. –Density increases

Even more about density Typically solids are more dense than liquids and liquids are more dense than gases Water is an exception: the solid is less dense –liquid = 1g/mL –solid = 0.92 g/mL –As water freezes it expands

Why? Water is …

2. Temperature – Boiling and freezing points Boiling point of water = 100 o C and 212 o F –This a very high boiling point Freezing point of water = 0 o C and 32 o F

Why? Water is …

3. High Specific Heat – it takes a lot of energy to change the temperature of water 1 degree –4.184 joules to raise 1g of water 1 o C (this is a ton of energy)

Why? Water is …

4. Surface Tension – the molecules of water cling to each other, they almost act as a membrane –Forms droplets –Meniscus –Floating needle –Water bugs

Why? Water is …

More physical properties 5. Colorless 6. Odorless 7. Tasteless 8. Universal Solvent – dissolves most things resulting in an aqueous solution

Why? Water is …
