2 Military Reconstruction Act of 1867 - know the stipulations of this law (p.151) 1. 10 Southern states divided into 5 military districts. 2. Former Confederate officials barred from office. Men who have never taken up arms against the Union can vote for delegates at state convention. 3.New state constitutions must guarantee suffrage to African American 4. States must ratify the 14 th Amendment and submit the new state constitutions to Congress for approval.

3 Reconstruction Tenant farming- Farmers agreed to pay cash rent to the landowner and was free to choose and manage his own crop (gave the most independence to farmer) Sharecropping- Farmers who agreed to give most of their harvest to landowners in exchange for land, seed and tools (landowner benefited most; most oppressive to farmer) Share-tenancy- farmers who agreed to give most of their harvest to landowners but had a choice in what crop and they bought their own supplies

5 Compromise of 1877 What did Democrats gain from the Compromise of 1877? - Subsidies to build railroads and ports - Powerful cabinet position - Federal troops withdrawn from the South What did the Republicans gain? -Rutherford B. Hayes became president

6 Reconstruction Ends What caused Reconstruction to lose its support? - High cost of military operations in the South worried many people in the North - Scandal in President Grant’s administration; He did nothing to make it right - Banks failed; economy took a down turn Which of these was most influential in marking the end of Reconstruction? Federal troops withdrawn from the South

7 The Southern Democrats Hate these people Carpetbaggers -Northerners who moved into the South and set up businesses that could have been available to Southerners; seen by Southerners as taking advantage of the South’s misfortune Scalawags -southern white men who were invited to join the Republican Party after the war
