Making Choices Know the context Context is the situation in which communication occurs i.e. School, job interview, church, the mall Appropriateness is what is suitable for a specific situation. i.e. Volume of voice

Making Choices (cont.) Context Determines Roles & Norms A role is a part played in a specific setting or situation. Your role will vary depending on the context you’re in. i.e. Student, daughter/son, soccer player, friend, girlfriend/boyfriend Context Determines Norms A norm is a stated or implied expectation. A norm is a guideline of what’s appropriate for a given context. i.e. Clothing, elevator behavior, handshakes

Communication in Organization An organization is a number of people with specific responsibilities who are united for some purpose. Functions of an organization Establish Identity Accomplish Unity Preserve History

Culture in Organizations Culture is the set of life patterns passed down from one generation to the next in a group of people. i.e. Language, food, dress, music Culture Shock is the confusion or anxiety that sometimes results when people come into contact with a culture different from their own.
