3 Young Napoleon Born in Corsica and moved to France, where he was picked on in school for both his Italian accent and his small stature  He developed a very aggressive and egotistical demeanor to hide the inferiority he felt. This is the essence of the “Napoleon Complex” Left for military school at 9

4 - After graduating, he was made a 2 nd lieutenant in the Revolutionary army -When he was 26 years old he led a mission to save Paris from a group of Royalists (those who wanted France to return to a monarchy) -After this, he is known as the Savior of the French Republic -The French love him for saving their new government and he is put in charge of defending all of France

5 More Success… Important Victories Won many battles to help keep the interior of France safe and also began helping the country gain more territory Because of Nationalism, people loved Napoleon fiercely—they regarded him as a hero who was saving their beloved country.

6 Napoleon Seizes Power 1799 An armed mob of Napoleon’s supporters surround the Revolutionary government Force them to turn the government over to Napoleon This is called a coup d'état ▫This is a French term which means overthrow of the state (or government)

7 The Beginning of an Empire A Plebiscite Napoleon called for a plebiscite (vote) as to whether or not the country wanted an emperor Napoleon was so well liked that the people voted yes

9 The End of Terror… People were tired of the chaos and violence of the revolution—they wanted to put an end to the internal conflict -What earlier empire does this remind you of? Napoleon offered strong leadership and stability -What earlier power-grab does this remind you of?
