Training Outwith the Activity O Concentration on specific aspects of fitness with no distractions of skills, game, equipment O More focus on energy system O Easy to apply and set up training O Easier to apply principles of training O A lot of work can be done in a short space of time with no distractions O After improvements have been made away from the game it will improve quality when applied into the activity O Excellent for building base fitness – pre season O Goal directed – personal training needs O Can be challenging and motivational to suit needs

Training Within the Activity O In basketball, we will train within the activity by using a series of basketball drills using an interval training approach for Speed Endurance and a continuous training approach for CRE.

Interval Training Within the Activity O All training drills will be performed at an intensity which will bring heart rate into anaerobic training zone (85%) O All drills have a 1:2 - work:rest ratio, therefore all drills will be performed for 30 seconds, with 60 seconds rest in between. O All drills will have a target to aim for within the 30 seconds.

Interval training within the Activity O Pages 10 & 11 detail, 4 drills: O Layup and sprint drill O Speed pass drill O Zig zag lateral sprints O Speed dribble

Continuous Training Within the Activity O All drills for aerobic endurance are performed at a lower intensity to work within aerobic training zone (70%) O Drills are lower intensity, but work for 20 minutes without a rest. O two line layup drill O 3 man weave O zig zag dribble O 4 corner passing drill

Why Train Within the Activity? O It takes place in the environment of the activity and so players can become familiar with game surroundings, court lines, etc. O Fitness needs are specific to a particular activity and so will be relevant to the activity O You can do conditioning work whilst practicing skills and game drills – the effects on the muscles are the same as in a game situation O It can be more motivating, therefore players will work much harder O You can work on strategies, whilst doing fitness work O It can involve more than one aspect of fitness at a time

Why train within the Activity? O Feedback is instant and can be linked to real game situations – eg. From results you can change tactics O It involves other people, which can be more motivating O It can be competitive and mirror a real game situation O The results and outcome are immediate O No delay between training and implementing the improvement
