2 ARMY Being a soldier is about trust, teamwork, mutual respect, leadership, professionalism, discipline and honour. You're trained as a soldier AND you're trained in a trade, so you can expect a lot of variety in your career. Soldiers don't just prepare for war they help local communities, assist in peacekeeping duties and provide humanitarian aid, at home and overseas. In this career you're guaranteed to find yourself in a range of challenging and demanding situations. If you're applying to be a soldier, we'll be looking for evidence that you have a desire to achieve, that you're someone who likes to do the best that they can, and have a competitive nature. 3 THE PAY FOR BEING IN THE ARMY They get paid up to $31,894 to $93,222 thousand a year

4 POLICE As a police officer, you will be on the frontline of crime initiatives. But your exact role will depend on your force and whether you choose to specialise after your training. Everyone who wants to become a police officer has to complete a two-year probationary period working on the beat as a patrol constable. Many officers prefer to spend the majority of their careers on patrol

5 THE POLICE GET PAID The middle half of all police and detective supervisors earned between $53,900 and $83,940 a year in 2006. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned less than $41,260. The highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $104,410 a year

6 design and technology Before developing a design into a product, designers have to consider who will use the item, how many will be needed, how the product should look, its effect on the environment, the materials required, their cost and availability. Some designers work in technical areas, like engineering or industrial design, where they need to understand manufacturing processes. Others work on the artistic side, as textile or fashion designers, for example.
