1 The Atmosphere SWBAT explain why air has pressure; describe the composition of the atmosphere; describe how earth energy causes water on Earth to cycle

2 Investigating Air Atmosphere Does air have mass?
the layer of gases necessary to support life. Does air have mass?

3 Get your lab notebooks Title: Does air have mass?
Measure the mass of your balloon. Blow up your balloon and tie it off. Measure the mass of your balloon again. Did the mass change? Why?

4 Composition of the Atmosphere
What gases make up the atmosphere? 78% Nitrogen 21% Oxygen 0.93% Argon 0.03% Carbon Dioxide Traces of: Water vapor Neon Helium Methane Krypton Xenon Hydrogen Ozone

5 Composition of the Atmosphere
Aerosols solids such as dust, salt, and pollen and tiny liquid droplets such as acids in the atmosphere.

6 Layers of the Atmosphere
Troposphere Lowest layer of the atmosphere Extends from earth’s surface to about 10km high Contains about ¾ of earth’s matter Weather takes place on this layer

7 Layers of the Atmosphere
Stratosphere Layer above the troposphere Extends from about 10 km up to 50 km high The ozone layer is contained here Absorbs much of the sun’s UV rays

8 Layers of the Atmosphere
Mesosphere Layer above the stratosphere Extends from about 50 km to 85 km high Contains little ozone Part of the ionosphere

9 Layers of the Atmosphere
Thermosphere Layer above the mesosphere Extends from about 85 km to 500 km high Filters out harmful x-rays and gamma rays from the sun Part of the ionosphere

10 Layers of the Atmosphere
Exosphere Layer above the thermosphere Extends from about 500 km up to where space begins (no clear boundary)

11 Earth’s Water Water cycle
the constant motion in a never-ending process that moves earth’s water

12 The Water Cycle Water from Earth’s surface heats up and evaporates, turning into gas and rising into the atmosphere. When it cools it condenses creating a cloud. The droplets then combine and fall to earth. Precipitation is either soaked into the ground and becomes groundwater or runs off into a body of water where the process begins again.

13 With a partner Answer questions 1-5 on page 347
Be sure to answer in complete sentences If you don’t finish in class, finish it for homework.
