2 Objective- Students will research a Nobel Peace Prize winner to determine the qualities of a peacemaker.

3 Nobel Peace Prize Background The Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded to individuals who work to promote peace. Four U.S. presidents have been awarded this honor in recognition of their work encouraging peace among nations. Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1833 and worked as an engineer and inventor throughout his life. In 1867 he patented an explosive material called dynamite that sold well and brought him great wealth. When he died in 1896, his will revealed that his fortune was to be used for Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to 124 Nobel Laureates since 1901.

5 Activity/ Task- Mr. Megna wants to start up a website that examines famous Peacemakers. He needs your help to research some of these peacemakers and compare and contrast them. Design a comparison chart of two winners. Compare the two Peacemakers. What qualities were similar? What qualities were different? Make sure you identify the qualities of a good Peacemaker and explain how these qualities can be used in mediation class.

7 Activity #2- On your chart paper include comparison chart.

8 Activity #3- Identify people you believe could be a recipient of the Nobel Piece Prize. (Could be a family member, friend or teacher). Write a paragraph describing the qualities deeds, and thoughts and why you feel this person is deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

9 Activity #4- Write an essay describing “how can I become a Peacemaker”.

10 Summary/ Conclusion- Assessments will be made each day during this activity about Peacemaking. 3-2-1
