4 What is a thunderstorm? The key ingredient that defines a thunderstorm is lightning. Since lightning creates thunder, a storm with lightning is called a thunderstorm.

5 When is a thunderstorm most likely to occur? Thunderstorms could occur in spring or summer. It could occur in the day or night hours, but it happens the most in the afternoons.

6 What causes a thunderstorm? Thunderstorm is a storm resulting from strong rising air currents; heavy rain or hail along with thunder and lightning. Anything from cold fronts and drylines to afternoon heating by the sun can trigger thunderstorm development.

7 How can we prevent or be prepared for a thunderstorm? Teach family members how and when to turn off gas, electricity, and water. Teach children how and when to call 911, police, and fire department. Keep an eye on the sky to be prepared. Make sure that all family members know how to respond.

8 How can you keep yourself safe during a thunderstorm? The very first thing to do is to make a lighting safety plan. You need to stay away from anything that is metal and do not stand near the windows. Don’t take a shower or a bath during a thunderstorm and do not use a telephone.

9 What are the effects of a thunderstorm? It could start fires, destroy houses, cause power outages, and blow trees apart. It could even kill people. Every day someone is struck by lightning.

10 How can we recover from a thunderstorm? You can recover from this disaster by going to the hospital and receiving first aid. People can work together to rebuild their houses if they were destroyed.

11 How does a thunderstorm affect the environment? Thunderstorms could destroy houses, trees, and other plants. It could start fires and destroy everything around. This would cause pollution. It could even kill people.
