2 1. Patricians – Members of Rome’s oldest and richest families. Only people who could hold public office or perform certain religious rituals. 2. Plebians – poor roman citizens who paid taxes and served in the army. 3. Republic - Roman government set up in 509 B.C.. People choose their rulers.

3 4. Consuls – two heads of Roman republic government. They were administrators and military leaders. 5. Veto – to say “no” to. 6. Tribunes – government officials who protected the rights of Plebians.

4 7. Legions – groups of 5,000 soldiers that was smaller and moved faster than the phalanx. 8. Legionnaires – members of the Roman legion.

5 9. Punic Wars – A series of three wars fought between Rome and Carthage during the years 264 to 146 B.C. 10. Latifundias – large estates in Rome that replaced small farms.

6 11. Publicans – Roman tax collectors hired by the government to collect taxes from people they conquered.
