They travel in rockets. They’re brave. They travel in groups. They travel in space. Astronauts need to be physically fit. Only special people can go to space. Astronauts are extremely intelligent. They’re sent on missions.

Who did what and when? “Mae Jemison” is an autobiography about the first female African American astronaut Therefore, through all the risks she took in her life, Mae Jemison was able to attain her dreams. Mae Jemison was born Eventually Mae became an astronaut. Mae did many things after high school on October 17 th, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama. When she was in kindergarten she told her teacher she wanted to be a scientist. Her teacher told her she should be a nurse instead. Back then African Americans were not treated well or expected to be important people. She went to college at Stanford University. There she studied science and Afro-American studies. After college Mae Jemison went to medical school. She became a doctor and went to Africa to help people in the Peace Corps. On September 12, 1992 she went to outer space in the space shuttle Endeavour. She conducted experiments on using biofeedback to combat space sickness and the effects of microgravity on pregnant frogs. Close to a year later, Mae Jemison quit being an astronaut. She founded the Jemison Group which uses science to help struggling countries.
