The effects of a web-based learning environment on student motivation in a high school earth science course 指導教授: Chen, Ming-puu 報 告 者: Chen, Wan-Yi 報告日期: 2007.07.04 Wang, S. K., & Reeves, T. C. (2006). The effects of a web-based learning environment on student motivation in a high school earth science course. Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 54(6), 597-621.
2
2 Introduction Educators must attempt to stimulate and sustain student motivation through the design of effective interactions The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a Web-LE about fossilization on the motivation of students in 10th-grade science
3
3 Literature review When students are more engaged in learning, they will more fully understand new knowledge and be more flexible in their use of it Appropriate strategies for increases in intrinsic motivation can be incorporated into curriculum design and that these strategies are feasible in most schools
4
4 Literature review Academic success than how much information is presented to them through instructional materials or other forms of instruction Four intrinsic motivational strategies –(a) challenge, (b) curiosity, (c) control, and (d) fantasy Studies have shown that use of these or of similar strategies enhances intrinsic motivation
5
5 Methods Materials –Intrinsic motivational determinants integrated into the Fossilization Web-LE design Participants –One male teacher and 27 tenth-grade students, constituting two science classes Instructional Design –students had use the Web-LE to solve problems Instrumentation –To measure the impact on motivation that the integration of four strategies for the enhancement of motivation

6 Results
7
7 Results Quality and quantity of learning –Web-LE was helpful and provided enough information –The assignment was well designed Interest in learning science with the Web- LE –The assignment was well designed Fossilization Web-LE evaluation –Easy to operate, that they easily found the functions they needed, that they could easily check the scenarios (paths) they had completed
8
8 Implications design principles for incorporating motivational determinants into similar Web-LEs ChallengeEstablish learning goals on the basis of student ability and appropriately increase the difficulty level of tasks ControlProvide students with opportunities to take responsibility for their learning outcomes CuriosityStimulate student desire to explore additional information FantasyPresent the learners with uncommon experiences
