Flippin’ Switches Team Project by: Brittani Perez Jared Smith
2
Design The Steps: -Weight raises the block using the pulley system -Block hits the track and releases the metal ball -Ball rolls through “roller-coaster” tubing -Ball falls from tubing onto second track and knocks into the lever -The lever hits a free standing block -The block hits a board which is suspended on springs -A cylinder, which has a nail on it, rolls down after impact and the nail hits another piece of wood -That piece of wood knocks into the free standing books -A domino effect with the books occur, and are knocked onto the switch for the lamp -When the switch is hit, the light goes….

Steps in Device Step 1: Potential Energy Step 2: Kinetic Engery and Rotational Energy (with solid sphere) Step 3: Angular momentum down the tube Step 4: Projectile Motion to second track Step 5: Torque as the ball hits the lever Step 6: Spring constant as block hits the board Step 7: Collisions of blocks to hit lamp switch

Stored Energy Weight and Pulley mgh = ½mv² First Track Center of Mass – Clamp and block are calculated to be a point mass, ball is solid sphere mgh = mgh + ½mv² Rotational Track mgh = ½mv² + ½Iw² Circular Tube Path mgh + ½mv² = mgh + ½mv² Projectile Motion V oy = V o * sinѲ o Collision Equation m1v1 = m1v1 + m2v2
