2
Setting The story takes place in a modern day suburban neighborhood.
3
Main Character Bryce Bryce is a middle school boy. He is good looking and popular, but he is also insecure. He worries about what his friends think and has a hard time standing up for what he really believes.
4
Other Character Julianna Julianna is one of Bryce’s classmates. She is moderately popular and moderately good looking. She is intelligent, hardworking, athletic, confident and very thoughtful of others. Sometimes she is confused about her role in the world, but she is a mostly happy girl.
5
Conflict Bryce’s problem is that he knows Julianna is pursuing him and he doesn’t have the guts to tell her to take a walk. Julianna’s problem is that she likes Bryce, but she can’t see past his “dreamy blue eyes.” The sunglasses symbolize the blindness that Bryce and Julianna have for one another.
6
Main Character-My Feelings Bryce I feel bad for Bryce. He is so busy trying to please everyone, especially his Dad, that he doesn’t like himself. I keep pulling for him, but sometimes he makes me angry. My advice to him: go for Julianna before it is too late!
7
Other Character-My Feelings Julianna Julianna is my kind of girl. She could care less what other people think about her, but she really cares for others. I’m always wanting her to get the good things she deserves. Bryce would be lucky to have her, but he is an idiot.

Theme Sometimes things aren’t what they seem. The tree symbolizes Julianna and Bryce’s view. In the book, she climbs a tree and sees much higher, clearer and farther than Bryce, who never leaves the ground. In other words, the theme is about our point of view.
